Tiling quotes are per square metre at heart, but the money is won and lost in what sits under the tiles: substrate prep, screed and waterproofing. Itemise those separately and clients stop comparing your number to a Bunnings-brochure guess.
What a tiler quote should include
- Area in m² per room or zone, measured at the quote visit
- Substrate preparation — screed, levelling, sheet underlay — itemised
- Waterproofing as its own line, with the certificate noted (wet areas must meet AS 3740)
- Who supplies tiles, grout, silicone and trims — and the allowance if it's you
- Tile layout (straight, diagonal, herringbone) and large-format handling where relevant
- Waste removal and protection of finished areas
- Your ABN, GST treatment, and quote validity period

Quoting tips from the field
- Photograph the substrate before quoting. A drummy slab or rotten fibre-cement sheet turns into a variation either way — better that it's priced up front.
- Name the waterproofing certificate on the quote. It costs you nothing to mention and it's the document the client needs at sale or inspection time.
- Price complex layouts as a visible multiplier. When herringbone costs 20% more and the quote says so, the client chooses with open eyes.
- Note tile supply clearly: client-supplied tiles mean you quote labour only, and the client owns breakages and shortfalls.
Common questions
Do tilers charge GST on quotes?
If you're registered for GST, show the ex-GST amount, the 10% GST, and the total separately — clients trust a quote they can follow. Once the job is done, the invoice for anything over $82.50 (incl. GST) must be a proper tax invoice showing your ABN.
Does waterproofing really need a certificate?
Wet-area waterproofing must comply with AS 3740 and the National Construction Code, and in most states it must be done (or certified) by a licensed waterproofer. Quoting the membrane and the certificate as their own line shows the client it's being done properly — and protects everyone if there's ever a leak claim.
Should the tiler or the client supply the tiles?
Either works — say which on the quote. When you supply, name the range and allowance so upgrades are a clean variation. When the client supplies, note that labour is quoted against tiles being on site, and that shortages or faulty batches pause the job at the client's cost.
