Handymen quote template

Handyman work is lots of small jobs, so the quote's real job is protecting your time. A minimum charge (or call-out) in writing filters out the $40 jobs that cost you an hour of driving.

What a handymen quote should include

  • A minimum charge or call-out covering your first hour including travel
  • Each task as its own line item so clients can add and remove jobs
  • Half-day and full-day rates for bigger lists (better value than hourly, easier to approve)
  • Materials: supplied by you at cost-plus, or by the client — stated plainly
  • What's outside your licence scope (electrical, plumbing, structural) so clients book the right tradie
  • Rubbish removal if the tasks generate it
  • Your ABN, GST treatment, and quote validity period

Quoting tips from the field

  1. Put the minimum charge in the first line of every quote. It's easier to waive for a good client than to justify after the fact.
  2. Ask for photos of every task before quoting. 'Fix a door' ranges from a hinge tighten to a plane-and-rehang.
  3. State plainly what you'll refer out — licensed electrical and plumbing work. It protects the client and your insurance.
  4. Offer the half-day rate when the list passes three hours. Clients book it happily, and you stop watching the clock.

Common questions

Do handymen charge GST?

Only once your turnover reaches $75,000 a year — then GST registration is compulsory and your quotes should show the 10% GST separately. Before that threshold, registration is optional; whatever you choose, put your ABN on every quote and invoice.

Why do handymen charge a minimum?

Because travel and setup cost the same whether the job takes 20 minutes or two hours. A minimum charge covering the first hour keeps small jobs viable — and clients accept it readily when it's on the quote before you arrive.

Hourly or fixed price for handyman work?

Hourly with a minimum for mixed task lists — you can't know how long twelve random tasks will take. Fixed price for standardised jobs like flat-pack assembly or TV mounting, where your experience tells you the time.
