Fencing quotes live on the metre rate — but the jobs that go wrong are the ones where removal, access and the neighbour weren't written down. A good fencing quote states the total metres, the material, and exactly who pays for pulling the old fence out.
What a fencer quote should include
- Total length in metres and the fence height (1.8 m vs 2.1 m changes the price)
- Material named exactly — Colorbond colour, timber paling grade, aluminium slat range
- Old fence removal and tip fees as their own line
- Posts, footings and any retaining section below the fence line
- Gates priced separately (supply + hang)
- Boundary position confirmed — title plan pegs or owner's instruction, and who's talking to the neighbour
- Your ABN, GST treatment, and quote validity period

Quoting tips from the field
- Photograph the whole fence line at the quote visit — trees, slopes and access all change the metre rate, and photos prove what you quoted against.
- Price removal and tip fees visibly. Clients forget an old fence has to go somewhere; the tip line is the one that causes arguments when it's missing.
- For shared boundaries, put the neighbour's share in writing on the quote — many clients need that document to collect the other half.
- Check the boundary before you quote. Replacing a fence 300 mm off the true boundary is an expensive mistake you wear, not the client.
Common questions
Do fencers charge GST on quotes?
If you're registered for GST, show the ex-GST amount, the 10% GST, and the total separately — clients trust a quote they can follow. Once the job is done, the invoice for anything over $82.50 (incl. GST) must be a proper tax invoice showing your ABN.
Who pays for a boundary fence — me or the neighbour?
Under dividing-fences laws in most states, neighbours usually share the cost of a 'sufficient' fence — but the process for notifying and splitting costs differs by state. Many fencers provide a quote the owner can show the neighbour; writing both shares on the document makes collection much easier.
Should fencing be quoted per metre or per job?
Per metre, with removal, gates and retaining as separate lines. Metre pricing lets the client adjust the scope (do the back now, sides later) without a whole new quote.
