Electrical quotes are easiest to approve when they're priced per point, per light, per fan — clients can add and remove items and watch the total move. That per-item clarity is what turns 'let me think about it' into a yes.
What a electrician quote should include
- Call-out fee stated separately, with what it covers
- Per-point / per-fixture pricing so clients can scale the job up or down
- Parts named with brand or quality level (e.g. Clipsal-grade vs budget fittings)
- Safety switch and switchboard condition noted if the job touches the board
- The test certificate you'll issue on completion (e.g. Certificate of Electrical Safety in Victoria)
- Patching and making-good exclusions if you need to cut into walls or ceilings
- Your ABN, electrical licence number, GST treatment, and quote validity

Quoting tips from the field
- Photograph the switchboard at the quote visit. If it's full or non-compliant, the client sees the problem with their own eyes before you price the fix.
- Price per point and let the client pick quantities — it converts better than one lump sum for 'electrical work'.
- State that the certificate is included. It costs you nothing extra to say, and it separates you from unlicensed cash operators.
- For renovation work, note that final pricing depends on what's inside the walls — old wiring can turn a rewire quote into a variation.
Common questions
Do electricians charge GST on quotes?
If you're registered for GST, show the ex-GST amount, the 10% GST, and the total separately — clients trust a quote they can follow. Once the job is done, the invoice for anything over $82.50 (incl. GST) must be a proper tax invoice showing your ABN.
What certificate should an electrician mention on a quote?
It depends on your state — Victoria uses a Certificate of Electrical Safety, NSW a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Naming the certificate on the quote tells the client the work will be tested and certified, not just switched on.
How do electricians usually price small jobs?
